Strathbungo - Centre of UK Cycling

Strathbungo is well known for it's bicycles with both Willy Bain's bike repair shop and Bike plus being in the village and Craig Mcmartin's being just along Pollokshaws Road in Crossmyloof. However on Sunday 4th Sept 2016 the village became the centre of UK cycling as the Tour of Britain made it's way through the village. Bradley Wiggins et al set off from Glasgow city centre and arrived in the village around noon.

For around thirty minutes Pollokshaws Road and its side streets were closed by Motor Cycle Police, whilst cycling enthusiasts and others lined the village's main thoroughfare to watch the spectacle. McDonalds even provided free coffee to onlookers and bowls of water for their dogs and then with the sun shining the cyclists arrived. First there was a small breakaway leading group and then the peloton itself, hundreds of cyclists riding as one unit, like a flock of birds, each cyclist being an integral part of the overall group. All dressed in the flamboyant colours of their respective teams. And then they were gone.

Fortunately local photographer Ian Goudie was there to capture the occasion. Those few minutes when Strathbungo was the centre of British cycling.

Shawlands Plans for a Plaza Major

A new civic square is planned, in the neighbouring village of Crossmyloof, aimed at providing a cultural heart to the thriving Greater Shawlands community.

The new Shawlands Cross Civic Square (hopefully someone will come up with a better name than that) is part of a £3million-plus scheme for the, ever improving, Southside.  The development, will increase accessibility to Queens Park from Shawlands Cross and effectively extend Glasgow's third largest park into the Southside's main thoroughfare.

The Pollokshaws Road/Langside Avenue junction at Shawlands Cross has long been home to the A-Listed Langside Halls, the key civic building of the area, and has more recently adopted the Queen's Park Farmers' Market.  The corner also hosts a wide range of shops, restaurants and pubs, many of which provide live music and other cultural activities. A number of sporting venues are also located on corner, which is presently used primarily as a taxi rank.

The development will relocate the taxi rank and replace it with a European style Plaza Major providing an area, furnished with seating, ambient lighting and fountains.  It is envisaged that the setting will also play host to cultural shows and events (concerts, drama, festivals, exhibitions...).

It is hoped that the exciting venture will add to the rich tapestry of cultural activities already available in Strathbungo, whilst attracting tourists to the village and the Greater Shawlands area.
